CHRISTINE HARTER
Born in the Seychelles Christine Harter has lived and worked in numerous other locations. Her formal higher training was in the UK at a time when abstraction was very much the order of the day in both colleges and galleries. Upon her return to Seychelles Christine developed a representational style of work for which she has become internationally celebrated and collected.
She is known mainly for her watercolour studies of everyday Seychelles – its houses, people and social tableaux, but she has also created many murals on a commission basis, executed either in oils or acylics. Christine says this of these two very different (in scale and media) creative approaches: “I like the contrast in scale, from the intimate closely-observed watercolour on paper to the life-size composition, demanding a very physical and satisfying engagement with the surface.”
